Lent, Lent, Lent!

Whenever someone asks me what my favorite time of the year is, I would have to say Lent. It’s 40 days of fasting before the celebration of Easter. While some people view this time to be a time of deprivation, I view it as a time of self-growth to better myself. It’s a time to teach yourself self discipline, because that will set you free.

Most people give up chocolate, cake, chips, junk food, etc. For years I have been giving up junk food for lent, but now I don’t even eat junk food so that would not be a valid lenten commitment. I’ve been asking around to see what others are giving up for ideas:

-One of my friends this lent decided that she is going to cover up all the mirrors in her house, and write a note that reads “You are beautiful because you are made in God’s image” on them.

-Another person that I know is going to donate money to help needy animals, and also work on her health.

What I’ve been contemplating for lent is working on my virtues. There are 7 virtues, these are:

-Chastity, Temperance, Charity, Diligence, Forgiveness, Kindness, and Humility.

These are the opposite of the 7 deadly sins which are:

-Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy, and Pride

I want to try to perfect these virtues to work on my relationship with my family. Recently we have been fighting a lot. Everyone is on the defensive all the time  and when I graduate from college and leave the house, I don’t want my memories to be of irritation and fighting with my parents and siblings. I will try and find ways every day to use these virtues and give up my pride and other vices.

My other lenten commitment is to try to post more on my blog. Do you have any lenten commitments? Feel free to post them!
